Teach Your Body To Do A Push Up
If you are having trouble performing a push up, or keeping good form throughout a push up, you may want to try this exercise progression to "teach" your muscles what to do. Start lying face down on the floor. Bend the knees and cross the feet at the ankles. Place hands flat on the floor, even with the shoulders. Keep the abs pulled in tight and push with your hands until your body is off the floor. You should maintain a straight body line from the shoulders to the knees throughout the entire exercise. The goal is for the hips and chest to leave the floor at the same time. When you have mastered this, try the same technique, but do not bend the knees. Start lying face down on the floor with legs straight. When you push up, you will finish on your hands and toes. The goal is the same - for the entire body including hips to leave the floor at the same time. Progress from this exercise to any push up.
